"Romanian Mioritic Shepherd"

Welcome to the official site of "de Bello Getica" kennel. We are Octavian Ratiu and Ioan Albiter, and we hope you'll enjoy what we have created here, as we did our best, for this wonderful breed: the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd dog.
  Why MIORITIC?  Because:
-He loves all the members of the family and is "mad" about children.
-Quickly understands who the friends of the family are.
-He gets along well with the animals in the yard.
-He is a beautiful and "natural" dog, with regular aspect.
-He can be both a playful cat, and a fierce bear.
-His heavy hair is not so difficult to maintain.

The Romanian people had a historical obligation towards all the shepherd dogs living and working in our country side, because it was also due to them possible to develop and continue the shepherding all over Romania, a main occupation since ancient times and up to the present. The big carnivores: bears, wolves, lynxes were and still are the main "enemy" of the shepherds. In Romania in the present there are about 5,000 bears, 2,500 wolves and 1,500 lynxes, more than in all the rest of the Europe. One can only imagine how many big carnivores lived once in our woods, that covered a much larger area than today, and that impressed many travelers from abroad with their wildness. Under these circumstances the Romanian shepherds, in different areas, created different types of shepherd dogs, more or less spread in the country, out of which they achieved to homologate two breeds: "Carpatin" and "Mioritic", and the third one "de Bucovina" is on its way.

The Mioritic, as a utility dog: - excellent watch dog for herds, farms, homes. He is a brave dog, but his attack is not "mad". He attacks his enemy by harassment, looking for the weak point - the result of centuries of fighting bears. Here we must mention that neither the Mioritic, and nor other dog breed in the world, can "attack the bear with equal chances" when speaking of a grown up, healthy bear of 200 - 300 kilos, not about a cub or an old and powerless individual. At a sheepfold the dogs are not supposed to kill anything or anybody, they are supposed to be vigilant, perceiving and brave to tackle with the predators, which they have to chase away as far as possible and make them give up ever again attack "their sheep".
